COURSE DESCRIPTION.
This course examines the communicative
use of the English language in various forms of spoken interactions. It
specifically points out to the need for business students to negotiate,
interpret, and express meanings by identifying context-specific demands of
language use in the workplace.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES.
By the end of this course, students
should be able to:
1. Describe
the nature and process of speech communication and its vitality in the
negotiation, interpretation, and expression of ideas.
2. Use
accurate and fluent language in the different forms of spoken interactions.
3. Communicate
in the English language effectively.
COURSE FORMAT.
This course uses oral communication
activities for the effective use of the English language.

COURSE
POLICIES.
On
Attendance
1. The
university rule on attendance shall be applied to any student enrolled in a
three-hour/one and one-half lecture class that is 54 hours of 18/36 sessions
inclusive of major examination and class suspensions.
2. The
student who incurs three consecutive/six absences accumulating to 9/18 contact
hours shall be dropped from the class roll.
3. In
cases where health condition is at stake, the student shall be given
consideration provided that a medical certificate signed by the attending
physician and a letter of excuse signed by the parent/guardian are presented.
4. No
student shall be given consideration vis-à-vis policy 2 on attendance. Other
concerns shall be addressed directly to the faculty handling the course.
On
Course Work
1. The
student shall be expected to listen and participate during formal
lecture-discussions or any teaching and learning activity designed to meet the
requirements of the course.
2. The
student shall demonstrate resourcefulness in the absence of sufficient titles
in the university library when assigned to undertake research work.
3. The
student shall be expected to conduct research work using learning support materials
on/off campus.
4. For
library linkages, the student may request an endorsement letter from the
college/university librarian to conduct library research off campus.
On
Academic Dishonesty
1. Academic
dishonesty shall not be tolerated.
2. Plagiarism
is a grave offense and when caught in any means shall be given a grade of 5.00.
3. The
student shall be required to use appropriate in-text citations either in MLA or
APA referencing style to avoid plagiarism particularly papers downloaded from
the web.
4. The
student shall observe appropriate in-text citations in lifting sources from
print titles.
